How the oximeter works: Spectrophotometry is the working principle behind the pulse oximeter. It emits a visible red light which passes through the blood and is detected on the opposite side by another part of the device known as a photodetector. This is how we get oxygen saturation results.

Light sensors in the device detect oxygen-carrying red blood cells and can also detect deoxygenated blood. Oxygenated blood appears darker than deoxygenated blood, and light sensors are very sensitive to this change in blood. It measures the variations in light absorbed by oxygenated and deoxygenated blood and is displayed as a reading on the device's screen.
